Re: Let Taha play for sure. In fact all Ottawa foosers who have ever been around should be more than welcome. Our community is too small not to enjoy all the skill we have kickin around in this city. If there is a problem with them winining the money than the present players better shape up a bit. Let anyone who shows play. Of course to satisfy the hugely fiscal concious you can always charge them a nominal fee to eat and drink. Ha LOL.
See you there

i'm okay with non-leaguers participating in the draft to an extent. I mean it's not an actual league night that counts for points anyway, right? so open it up to all. The only thing i would say to that is, to be fair, if there are an odd number of players, a non-leaguer is the odd man out. union members who have paid their dues shall be protected.

On that note, i do think that leaguers who haven't paid their fees in full yet should not be allowed to participate in the draft unless they pay up. There is a bank machine on site. It's been like 8 weeks... plenty of time to cough up the pennies required.

Packer was telling me last week that there are still several outstanding dues... time to pony up, lads.

hey j-principled!

nothing wrong with the ideas behind your propose
I’ll try bring out some nuancing just the same

right, only regular paying league members support our league activities, in full

right, we can also use and benefit from the participation of subs

on the other hand I fail to ignore how neatly league members not yet paid in full fit in-between the two: they are like subs with a bit more commitment, like regular league members with less disposable cash, or like women (no comparison here intended in a disparaging manner, to either side)

all benefit our activities as well as from our activities

also, on that union sidebar, remember the union clause about forcing temps into regular employees after they have been regularly temping for a certain period of time? Maybe it could be applied here?

Considering we are using league funds for the prize money, one would consider that only players who contribute to the league fees should be eligible.

I don't have an issue with it, but some might.

Also, am I allowed to play? I'm not officially in the league.

Taha

got it

pretty simple, pay now or paid earlier, fair and balanced better than Fox:

non regular league players pay regular dyp fees, and that gets added to the prize pot

Taha don't care, he plans to win regardless

it's a big tent but all give at least a bit

Legendary.
This is a great idea. Its a fun experience for newer players and for people who haven't experienced this before. And the questions regarding ranking, the rankings are established when you see who is all there and you rank from 1-w/e consulting a few people with the choices.

They do a modified version of this in the states for fundraisers called a buy your partner and people go up for auction and people of certain rankings can bid on them and everything goes to charity.

RE: Mid Season Tournament - 5barwarrior - 10-Dec-2012

I'll rank a list shortly. Doesn't matter who is there or not. If someone doesn't show, skip over them.

I predict that JP will be one of the first 3 players picked.

oohhhh... that's a tough one! it could happen, but i think it would be more based on personality than skill level. i.e. since i've played "down there" for a few seasons, they all know me and so i'm more approachable.

but if they had any sense about them, Merv, Jon, and Taha would go pretty much in order... since any newb is going to be relegated to goalie as a matter of fact..... and i'm a goalie first after all.

if the rookie who picks me wants to practice switching positions every goal or so, then by all means... be warned you'll be getting your fair share of forward playing time! lol....

All that said, I'm pretty sure i'll be playing with my former partner Mel.

Undoubtedly my prediction is based partly on personality, but also partly on skill. On a good night, you can carry anyone to victory.

On the personality side, you can give advice and not sound condescending giving it. Unlike Merv, who either gives them the silent treatment, or gives them advice which sounds like every sentence ends with "... you retard".. you know, like "you need to cover pullside more... you retard"... "don't shoot the ball with the goalie... you retard".. etc Smile

RE: Mid Season Tournament - Paul - 10-Dec-2012

I played a whole season with Merv - I never once felt like he was talking down to me - but he certainly would get pissed off or annoyed if I didn't listen to his advice.

I think that outside of my first season playing with Thomas and some 1on1 with Mario I, it's when I learned the most about foosball.

With all that said, not everyone is willing to be the mentor - some guys jsut wanna go out and compete and have fun; you can't fault someone for getting annoyed when he's forced into a situation where he's not able to do what he went out to do.

RE: Mid Season Tournament - deliverance - 10-Dec-2012

I think Taha's trolling a little, and Paul's partially right (I never felt that Merv got pissed off when you didn't follow his advice). People will be passionate, and sometimes they may sound like they're rushed or agitated but they're trying to tell you something quickly without wasting a timeout in between a goal or something.

I played one league with Merv & Dan K and my game elevated immensely from that one league. I won most improved player thanks to both Merv & Dan.

Never did I feel that they were pissed off or annoyed at me -- during tight games it helped me play harder and pay more attention to my play, since I knew I was the weakest player on that team and I didn't want to be the reason we lose. We lost the league, but won the playoffs after 8 weeks of them training me.

Leads to my earlier point that allowing someone to play with a highly skilled player benefits you greatly since you can see first hand what they are doing and start to emulate their movement (even if you don't understand 'why' they're giving/doing a certain defence/pass/shot/etc).

Even if you don't agree with the delivery of some people, it's invaluable to get a chance to play with any of the top 5 guys at OFA, even if it's just for the DYP.
