Next League - New Idea (Tiebreakers) - jpguywatchout - 22-Nov-2012

if you are tied with your opponent at the end of the night: I was thinking that it might be fun for the tie-breaker to be a little more active... not passive like Goals For/Goals Against.

Just wanted to gauge if there was any appetite to add a really quick NHL-style shootout at the end of the night for teams that are tied in points on that night's game sheet.

End of the night, both teams tied - proposed scenario:

Just like the NHL, there would be 3 shots (i.e. each team member shoots once - forward shootout style). Whoever has the most goals wins.

At the very least, i feel this is better than winning by simple GF/GA when the sheet is tied at the end of the night. Imagine if you are tied with your opponent at the end of a really competitive night and you "lose" because they scored just one more goal than you. Does that really mean they are the better team?

Anyone see a problem with doing a quick forward shootout? Or propose a better solution? I wouldn't want to add another game at the end, because the night is already long enough as it is... a quick shootout would only take a couple of moments.

[Additional notes: 1) defending team can choose their goalie during the shootout; 2) if tied after 3 shooters, sudden death forward shootout; 3) Three team members are required for the shootout - If you've played the sheet with only 2 team members because someone didn't show and you guys are tied at the end of the night, the night is decided by GF/GA.]

it's all about improving the league... if status quo is best, then so be it. Who's open to a little fun change? I think it's kind of a neat idea.... at least it's a bit more dramatic than winning based on simple GF/GA.

I love that idea.

I love the shootout idea. Definitely sounds fun Smile Ties don't happen often anyway... I don't see an issue with it.

Make it so number 1

I would suggest -
Each player takes one shot
Each player must defend
After the first three shots, if it not resolved then it continues until it is, much like the No Hockey League.
No player may defend or shot two more times than any other team member (3-1, 4-2...). Everyone has to take equal turns. You can decide who goes first but you can't let someone go more often. (Basically you can't let Taha defend and shoot all the time because Merv sucks).

I would suggest that in the event of a team having only two players, the opposing team can choose who gets to shoot/defend for the missing third player. So if it was only Dan and Jesse one night and there was a tie, their opponents can say that Jesse has to shoot twice while Dan has to defend twice. The team with three still has to use all three players evenly.

If it is two on two, then they do it just like it was three on three.

First three rounds are preselected independently - both teams write their order down in private and then share. After that, shooter is announced and defender selected.

Team 1 (higher ranked team) goes first.

Thoughts?

We should write down all the league rules and have them on site.

RE: Next League - New Idea (Tiebreakers) - jpguywatchout - 22-Nov-2012

yeah we should write them down... but it's hard to get a volunteer for such an administrative activity. Hey, since you are not allowed to show up physically for a while, maybe you can use that time to pen them for the OFA? just a thought. Either you or SilentSam... since he has an opinion about everything, this task would right up his alley.

so you think everyone should be forced to defend, eh? that's interesting.... if this were indeed NHL style (which we are basing the format on), then your idea would be akin to forcing your back-up goalie to take his turn.

I'm inclined to let the best team defender do his thing. but i won't raise a stink about it.... (i understand that the "lesser goalies" gotta get better somehow! and rounding out your skillset is what league has always been about)

anything is better than the status quo.

Does someone have a complete list or are some of them word of mouth? I don't mind drafting something, but I'm not sure that it will cover all the differences for OFA or whether we know the exact scenarios for subs, etc.

I have a list typed up already at home that I used to print on the back of the sheets.

I'll revise it with the current rules and post it.
