Proposal: H-O-R-S-E game instead of something - deliverance - 24-Mar-2015

So last Friday's DYP, Jon, Steve, myself, and Packer played a lot of games of HORSE and had a lot of fun with it, it let us experience and practice a lot of shots and passes that we normally wouldn't attempt in a game format.

Wondering what you guys think about implementing it for one of the leagues, or on a permanent basis, either as another option on specialty games, or in place of something else. Some of the things we talked about,

it's too long to have a traditional game of "race to 7" for this format.

Basic ideas:
Coin-flip determines which rods can be used, 2, 5, 3, or "all" category.

Player who didn't win the coin flip gets to choose what sot to set, and number of attempts (1-3). If they make the shot, the 2nd player must make the same shot or they give up a point.

If the shot is not set, the next player can set any shot they want.

Race to 4 or 5.

Same shot can't be used more than once (successfully).

I like it in principle, but the rules need to be really clear. Is a rolling pull the same as a pull? What about a walking snake vs standstill vs rocking? Rolling pull-kick vs not rolling, etc? Is Mark's tic tac one side to the other and then burrito just a burrito?

JP and Carm would kill at this game. Good luck trying to pull off a burrito then a backpin from the 3, or backpin bank shot from the 2.

The way we did it, is announce the shot before we do it, similar to how you would play pool.

We also agreed basically to simple things:

5 bar weave is a 5 bar weave, so however you want to do a tictac/weave before say a stick wall it's fine as long as it's a fluid motion.
We distincted mostly as: hesitation, rolling, tic tac, weaving and those are part of the shot, so tic tac pull kick is different than a stationary pull kick, same as the burrito.

Not suprisingly, Steve beat us pretty badly at horse. JP, Carm, Taha would all do very well at this event.

We would maybe do a race to seven if we changed the points awarded. The way we played in Edmonton a few weeks back when I was there, was that the person who sets the shot, shows it in super slow motion first (if necessary) in order for everyone to see and understand what they are attempting. Then they get up to three attempts to make the shot. If they make their first attempt then the opponent only get's one attempt. If the person who sets the shot has to take two attempts to set it, then the opponent get's two attempts, and if set on the third shot they get three attempts.

The problem with the scoring is that in standard HORSE, you get a letter if you fail to hit a shot set by your opponent. In our league we accumulate points in the race to 7 that at the end of the night affect the GF and GA stats. I think that the points should be awarded to the player who sets the shot if the opponent fails. If it's one point each time, then the race to 7 will take way too long. What we could do is award points like this:

Set on First Attempt = 3 points
Set on Second Attempt = 2 points
Set on Third Attempt = 1 point

Either way, we will need to play around with the rules and time matches to figure out the best points strategy and rules to keep the game from taking too long.

I like the idea of including it as an option for Specialties. I also think that there is potential to get all six players involved in a new game.

We could also try a game to 5 where all your points need to come from different shots.

Where a shot is a variation of:
3-bar: Push, pull, snake, front-pin, push-kick, pull-kick, burrito, tic tac
5-bar: tic tac, left hook, right hook
2-bar: Squeeze, and all the 3-bar shots

Variations of the same shot don't count (rolling, standstill, rocking, etc).

Junk goals count.
