OK - So we need to start to get these kids playing. Any ideas?

I can go around the school and post up flyers again.
Should we run another win a Wii?
Or maybe when the PS3 comes down in price we can give away one of those.

Need to somehow make it attractive to them....

Liquor laws aside, we could try to implement this. What did you have in mind?

These thoughts on the subject of attracting people to foos are not original.
This topic has been beat to death on other boards.

I think in our little town there are two types of foosers. The bar crowd with the occasional good hacker with a little game and then the minority which are the competitive foosers who play high level tournament foos.

Of course Ottawa foos players are the minority group. We have to concentrate our efforts on the bar players and recreational foosers. Get them out. Have some kind of prizes for the best of the bar hacks crowd.
If anyone was listening to the guys Frank brought out to the DYP you would hear some good stuff. This is boring. The snake shot sucks. The way a tournament forward waits on the shot sucks. Move faster I am bored. Why am I the goalie??

Only competitive foosers are interested in the tournament game . The bar crowd wants to see Taha shoot the alien. They want to have fun. They do not want to stand there and have a bunch of OCD players shoot the snake on them.

Of course once you introduce the bar hacks to foos a very small percentage of them may become addicted or interested enough to stay and learn to play competitive foos.
I think if we want to enlarge our base we have to have events geared towards the bar crowd. Events that are spit are a good start. I think we should have DYP events and make and have little prizes for best in the bar. No competitive foosers allowed.

We seem to chase potential players away when we play the game seriously.

Look at the new venue. We have been there for awhile and not one new player. What gives??? I think we have to look for new methods as well as get out to the local Boys and Girls clubs to make foos stronger.

Keep the DYPs split is a good start . Also there are a ton of players who dont come out anymore . Why. Lets get some of the no shows back out.

Just a few thoughts.

Agreed, we need to make sure that we don't scare the new people away. Maybe instigating a "fast ball" rule when newbies are on the table.

Now THAT is a terrific idea!

I think the problem of people getting bored during a game isn't something you can really change. I have fuckin A.D.D. and yet during a game i am far from bored... I get bored when I'm waiting to play. Waiting to play can be brutal at times. (especially if you're player 2)

How can we solve this problem? More tables? shit, put a few Warrior tables in the mix so the people not playing have something to hack on while they wait... stay warmed up. If you're worried about people playing the warior tables for free, just don;t leave balls around, put a club on the bars... I mean, sure Ideally it'd be nice to just have more tornado coin ops, but we all know those aren't cheap, you can practically buy 3 or 4 to 1 warrior:tornado.

That's my suggestion, the new players could get coached all night by pros, they can hack it away vs eachother between matches... hell, table time is the only way to get remotely good at this game. a new guy comes in, and plays vs taha, vern, chris, hell any one of the members really and they are bound to get frustrated. Most people dont have a table @ home to practice, so my suggestion, if you're serious about it, is to put some tables in there that are reserved for practice during league games. don't play league matches on em, just use them to warm up and practice.

I think it's awesome that there'll be 4 tables, it will definately cut back on the waiting, however it still won't help the new guys get the practice they need with the pros.

True, they need the practice but the greater concern is that we intimidate them away.

Ideally you need to set up an environment where they compete amongst themselves, either at Algonquin or at Tail Gators. Then introduce them to us.

that's a good idea, and perhaps after you've got them interested, it would still be a good idea to have clinics. The reason I suggest having a few tables on the side is because it's hard enough to get people to come to the league nights on wednesday, while they're there, waiting around, they could be getting tips, or just practicing on their own, getting a better feel overall. If the only games new people play are league games, I wish them the best of luck at getting good, but I can guarantee a 90% quit-rate.
