Josh
Steve
Elli
Justin

Casti

Dan
Shadi
Gid
Sam
Omar
Vern
Carm
Merv
Jon
JP
Taha
Frank
Chris A.
Dan K.
Manny
Frankly, everything after Shadi is a toss up since you guys won't get to pick.
I will defer to Packer to make changes as he sees fit as he knows the teams better than me this league.
Any none league player (paying member) costs $5 to play.
Draft starts at 8:15 SHARP. NO ONE ALLOWED IN THE DRAFT AFTER 8:15. Otherwise it will take all night long. If you're going to be late let Packer know!!!!

it might be a good idea to refine/maintain The List -- it would be good to have such event more often (just my opinion)

The list needs to be fixed up if we want to use it in the future imo. Im sure Casti's program will help, we just need to establish what the becnhmarks are for rating, are they past leagues finishes, current league standings, public opinion, performance at tournaments?

It can be any combination of those. As long as we have the past league sheets somewhere we'll be able to start looking at combination of things for rankings:
- most wins in doubles, goal differentials, etc (this would count one of the two participating players on the team)
- cummulation of any win in regular play (singles/doubles)
- best specialty player
I'll be doing a dry run with Chris probably in the new year, we can try a couple things out. Probably the simplest thing we'll try is to rate everyone based on this current league, where every tier player starts off with an ELO number, and we'll do a few runs with that data and different starting seeds to see where the players end up.

I'm just giving examples of how you can look at the data

The ELO rating system seems like it could be a good way to rate the players.
For those unfamiliar with this rating system, it starts with a base rating (usually 1600) and awards points for a win and deducts the same amount of points for a loss. It also weighs the descrepancy in points (and thus skill) between competitors in the calculation of points. The amount of points depends on the "k" factor of the tournament; this allows you to make some events worth more points than others (ie competitive vs casual)

Just not sure how it factored up. I think I understood your explanation. Rookie will pick the person the they know vs rank. However, a noob would just pick the highest ranked person with no partner. No?

Yeah but its over and there is nobody who is a complete noob that was there because the scenario didn't happen. You shouldn't have been ranked first and DanK shouldn't have been ranked second, but thats how it went. To solve the problem so it doesn't occur in the future all we need is two things, benchmarks and transparency, and Casti's system that hes working on will help with that. In the mean time consulting 4-5 of OFA's regulars when comprising a ranking list would probably save a lot of headache.

I think going forward, I'll put some effort in ranking everyone in the top tier properly. I didn't take into account that a noob would just pick #1 on the list. After I got 2/3 through the list, I stopped caring about order and just made sure I wrote everyone's name down.
Won't happen again.

the list sequenced the pickers not the pickees, it was fine, the list did the job it was intended to do for this event
top players are Merv, Jon, Taha -- not necessarily and certainly not always in that sequence
next group is JP, Frank, ChrisA, Manny -- again not necessarily in that sequence -- and Thai that has played relatively recently fits in there as well and so does Carm; Omar too but only if he could get a couple of consistent 3-bar shots to go with his superior passing game then Omar could be in the top group even - if if if
if ChrisT were to get back to it for a while he would fit neatly in-between the above two groups
but then again there are lots of other players that would be right up in there if they got back to playing consistently
the "young guns" can be quite good but also can falter in the face of adversity - need maturity to temper their game, time and seasoning to impart strength, insight, toughness, and variety to it
a system based on statistics of wins/losses is a record of results more than an assessment of abilities of specific players - it is a team game and the variables and circumstances associated to it are often impossible to record and account for - but it is certainly worth going for it.
