How to level the field for diverse talent and still spur competition. All the tried and well worn alternatives... Handicaps, Rankings, Controlling talent for team compositions, and more
The present one is best. Regardless of abilities the incentives are for winning and for playing in upper tiers - as opposed to considering sandbagging - possibly not quite 100% but close to that the best I ever observed
Performance gives better standings. Composition of tiers changes adjusting to performance. After 3 weeks 2 teams get shifted up and 2 get shifted down, middle tier changing half of its teams. There is variety to a point, to a reasonable point. Match-ups are not blow-ups to a point, to a reasonable point
By all means keep suggesting changes and perfectioning you all.

professional experience then.
I wasn't meaning your personal experience, I was hinting towards a more Judicial Procedure

How? JP in that league started in tier 3 since he had two people on his team who had never played league before. No one could've predicted he would go undefeated throughout the entire league.

that seems extremely reasonable, no two-jumps, neither up nor down

you can play with Mary, but you would need to take it down a notch or two, or five.

I think Evan's proposal of a 2 tiered system would work fine, teams 1-5 are fairly matched, theres nothing wrong with 1 team being a little weaker and having to fight for a win in the top tier and yoyoing a couple times. If you dominate your tier you should move up, thats enough said, if you can't beat the worst team in the tier above then there is a skill gap that will inspire development.
Besides, the whole league is designed to make things more balanced and close regardless of combined skill level. 2 points any team can win, rollerball and 3 man, and specialty though it requires some more skill could make that number go from 2 to 4. Now most Wed league nights end with a score of like 8-4 or 9-3 or 7-6 or something like that, so between 11-13 are what decide who wins. If 33% of the points are awarded based on alternative game types teams without the overall skill level of another team could still win or at the least make it close.
To be honest the teams that are yoyoing are doing so because they genuinely are in that spot, when I look at our team or Vern/Gid/Carm's team I see us both as fairly even and both would struggle to beat those top three teams, it would be a fight.

Food for thought.
Deciding the number of tiers and teams per tier is no easy task. 12 is the nicest number of teams to work with, 3 groups of 4 or two groups of 6. Both work with a 15 week rotation schedule. This will lead all of you to ask, but why 16 then? This gives me one more week to ensure a head to head match up for the top two teams.
If you have any number of teams other than 12 it becomes a real mess. How would you divide 11? 10? 13? 14? It can be done but there are challenges with all.
I chose tiers of 4 because it made the most sense at the time. I think transitioning to two tiers of 6 for the second half of the league has merit, otherwise Vern will never play Packer as they will always be ships passing in the night. This decision can be made after the next rotation which will be in the new year.

I wonder if there is a way to set the league up like a huge tournament.... Im not sure if that would work, but it'd be pretty neat if it could.

Gid you just don't want to have to play us haha
Listen, Jesse and I were discussing this two tier format last night and at first I was strongly against it because the skill level difference between the two tiers would be ridiculous. But then he drew out a 3 week plan that makes sense.
It's a 3 week cycle:
Week1: All the teams in each tier are freshly ranked in order from 1-6. They play in such a way that the higher ranked teams play each other while the lower ranked teams play each other.
Week2: Still based on the original rank coming into this cycle.
Week3: based on the previous two weeks, we re rank the teams to see who plays who in week 3. It's kind of like the first two weeks are a round robin, then the third week is playoffs to see who flips tiers.
This would make it less likely that the same teams will flip flop each cycle. it also makes sure that the teams who may be unevenly matched but in the same tier don't actually play each other unless they deserve to. For instance the only way teams 5 or 6 would get to play the top ranked teams is if they win two weeks in a row and if that's the case then they deserve to play them.
My original concern about low ranked teams getting destroyed by a bored high ranked team is eliminated with this strategy as shown in the following exhibit:
[attachment=50]
I'll leave that up for discussion. If people are happy with that then perhaps we can implement it in the new year as Chris said.
Cheers,
Packer

what's wrong with "flip-flops"? Nothing, other than having had a bad label assigned
more like roving wanderlust: you get more exposure to more teams, experience winning and losing, up and down, hot and cold, on top and under.
flip flop indeed, a label in a similar vain for the alternative of being stuck in one tier would be "stagnating"
neither is forever

You guys crack me up. I dont really care what structure we play under and who is in what tier. Is your proposal really good for the league or the majority of the teams in the league or is it just good for your team? If you really want things to change they must be for the good of the whole league not just one team.
I really dont see a benefit under your proposal compared to the current system. There is only one way to play and that is on the table. If you win on a consistent basis you belong in the top tier. If not work on your game instead of trying to change the format of league.
See you at foos.
