WL2013 Playoff Match Ups
#61
Chris, Have a look at this situation as I think we need some clarity here. I am not in any way trying to disadvantage team Europe and PSS only trying to look after our team. I thought it was single elim and we would get to play Jon and his guys for third place on the basis of a full sheet.
In leagues past it has always been single elim for playoffs.

Valid points, but what it comes down to is the fact that it was posted how it was going to be weeks ago. If there were issues they should have been raised then. Other leagues were other leagues, this is this league.

Wed was to see who gets to play for 1 and 2. The rest of us all now get to play 2 mini sheets instead of watching the finals, its just more fun.

If it was single elim there would only be 2 teams left to play Wed (M&M and FB4F) because your team and PLA have also lost 1.

It is different this time Vern.

Ten days ago it was announced that 3 tiers were collapsed into 2 to make it more workable but also arguably to better match the spread of abilities as seen during weeks of play -- this is certainly true for the 6 teams now regrouped into the upper tier: the point in the 12 teams where the difference is most marked is after the first 6. For the sake of argument there is also a noticeable gap after the first 3, but a break there would make things unworkable. (As soon as teams were formed it was obvious which were the stronger, but that is a moot argument, so far tiers are the best device we have seen to "level the field" and still maintain competitiveness.)

I'm not in a good position to evaluate the next 6 teams in relation to each other, so I won't.

Look at it this way: When teams were formed the relative strenghts were discernible if not obvious. Tiers and playoffs were arranged to diminish that within the parameters of what is workable and reasonable. Now in our present group of 6 there are the 3 outstanding teams and 3 challengers; since 2 of the outstanding teams have already qualified for first or second place the 3 challengers have to go past each other and past the stronger team (PLA) to make it third. It is good that those that only played one round last night are given a shot. I looked at the chart when it was posted and considered it a good effort. The long standing tradition of giving "byes" for team(s) finishing at the top was maintained, the 3rd finishing of the strongest 3 teams managed to upset PLA anyway. Similarly the teams that lost at the first round last night will need a small upset to do better and go past the first round next Wednesday.

Next Wednesday everybody plays and everybody gets a chance.

sometimes I choose my words carefully in hope they will be read the same way, other times I'm here just to goof around Tongue

I'm okay with whatever system is in place now that it is explained. Really my main goal is to play more foos. So this works for that purpose and I really dont care who I play -as it is all fun for me. I have enjoyed playing against all the teams so far and I know this will continue. Gid, Carm and I are equal opportunity ass kickers. LOL

Since we have to wait for Manny to come back... does my team and Merv's team have anything to do on wednesday?

Hello Vern:

Sorry for the delay in replying, work has been crazy.

To answer your questions:

Yes - League playoffs have historically been single elimination
No - Playoff format has not been written down as a general rule. The format is dependent and changes with the composition of each league and the number of teams.
Yes - All previous playoffs have been half sheets. This is the first playoffs to use a full sheet (since the modern tier format).
Yes - You are right in that your teams playoff record is better than the teams that lost the first round and yet now you have the same footing going forward in the next round. I could not find a way to address this and still give everyone two rounds.

Here is the story on how this league playoff format came about.
Historically with 12 teams, we would have kept teams in the three tiers and done two rounds of half sheets, single elimination with prizes for first and second place. This works nicely as everything is done in one night, prizes are well distributed (50% of teams get money). In previous leagues there has always been a good division of teams equally across tiers. I would not have to depend on the stats to determine who should be placed in each group as it was very obvious who belonged where. There was no objections and everything worked out well.

With this league the lines between tiers (tier 1-2 and tier 2-3) were very blurry. It was not very obvious who belonged where. Conversely, there was a good division if you divided the teams into two groups. Doing so raised the problem that you could not resolve six teams in only two rounds (one night). This would require the need for a third round and a second night. Prizes will still be payed out to 50% of the teams in the form of 1, 2, and 3. As a result of this, 4 of the 6 teams would get to play a minimum of 2 rounds while 2 teams only gets to play one.

By adding a second chance to the teams that were knocked out the first round gives them the same number of minimum matches as everyone else. I thought this would be best solution for everyone - more foos, more competition, more fun.

I'm sorry you missed my post explaining the format a couple of weeks ago. I'll take care to make sure everyone is aware of the format well in advance in the future. Unfortunately, we've missed the chance to modify these playoffs.

No.

We could try to determine who plays who for week 16. If you happen to play Merv, you could do that, otherwise, it would be best to just wait one more week.

Chris, Good socialist explanation. I probably saw the post you are talking about but it didnt register in my mind. If there was big money involved I would care. As it is it is not a big issue. My point is made. Thats what happens when you cant place 1 or 2. Even two is no good because we all play to win. It feels a bit like the kiddie pool though. LOL

Is anyone specific responsible for posting the playoff results? The bottom half of the league is also in the playoffs guys!

Kirby beat Kamikaze in the 1st round, and AJS beat Kirby in the 2nd round.
IGYSRH beat The Shit Balls in the 1st round.

Does anyone know who won the match between Hammer Blow and IGYSRH?
Are the payouts posted somewhere?

Thanks!

You can show up and be crushed by me... unless you're playing defense for me. Smile

Steve, lots of good people in those 6 teams, certainly I did not care to overlook anybody.

Sorry if it might have looked that way Sad

When I posted results for half of the teams only I was strictly freelancing and was limited by what I knew -- I'm amazed that I got those results right.

What I did was pretty much equivalent of what you have just done for the other 6 teams -- which I abstained from doing because I had no clue.

Gid, it did not seem like you were overlooking anyone. It was in fact very clear that you were just freelancing by posting useful information that we all wanted to see. It should have been a trigger though (if one was needed) for OFA to post up the bottom half/all playoffs results.
