Ottawa Tournament
#1
Hello Players:

In the process of planning a tournament. I would be the tournament director.
Couple of things I'll need from the you guys.

1) Any objections to Nov 10-12 dates. I realize Remembrance Day is Saturday.

2) Tables. Chris A and I have volunteered our tables. Anyone else can help out?

3) Format. I would like to run a Championship format - Basically swiss style round robin for several rounds 8+, then group elimination. Group selection would be based on performance - top 8, then next 12, then next 16... Friday would be DYP (Maybe last man standing, or Monster, or regular Double knock out). Saturday singles, Sunday Doubles.

Thoughts?

Chris

Hi Chris, happy to hear this. There was a tournament format that is basically round robin with a unique playoff format that I wanted to see what you guys thought about it, I have included a link below to help with a visual.

Basically you split everyone up into groups, if we go off of previous numbers lets say we get 40.
- 4 groups with 10 teams in each group
- you play everyone in your group once in a race to 7
- top 4 teams from each group go to winners bracket, 5 - 8 go to losers bracket, 9 and 10 are eliminated after the group stage
- all playoff matches are 2 out of 3, with the finals, or semi finals and finals being 3/5
- first round of the losers bracket is played first amongst the 16 teams that finished 5 - 8 in their bracket, 8 matches total, can be played all at once on our 8 tables
- then you play first round of upper bracket, again 8 matches can all be played at the same time on our 8 tables
- keep going until the end
- optional, you could make all upper bracket matches 3/5 instead of 2/3

I really enjoy this format because it guarantees you 9 race to 7 matches, while also giving you a benefit for doing well in your group, rather than just a decent seeding, if you finish 1 - 4 you go into the upper bracket and have a chance to come back if you lose because you are just dropped to the lower bracket. While teams that start in the lower bracket (seeds 5 - 8 from each group) don't have a second chance, if they lose, they are already in the lower bracket and are out.

This kind of caters to all crowds, noobies get lots of games before they are eliminated, its kind of double elimination for those that like that, but only for the top 1-4 teams from each group, and the finals you have the option do require a double dip or not to require a double dip (its not mandatory, since if you make it out of the lower bracket to the finals you truly deserve to be in the finals). And the most the important, its the best for the Tournament Director because everything is scheduled ahead!

With the picture I have provide, the bracket would just be doubled in size, because its based off of 16 teams and ours would be based on 32 teams.

Wow, very interesting format for sure. Maybe we could give it a try locally some night when we have a good turnout and see how everyone likes it. Looks like fun and lots of foos for sure. Maybe too much foos for some. Just a thought. Like it though

Hey Jesse:

this is a double Elimination bracket without the first round. Interesting idea. I will draw up the format that I was thinking about.

Back to the other points.

Anyone concerned about the dates?

Its only 'double elimination' for those who make it into the top bracket, for those that start in the lower bracket its single elimination.

Just FYI New York State is the weekend before. Colorado States is the same weekend. Louisiana State is the following weekend.

Hmm... We could go out a week. The problem is we will start to get into Christmas party season for Tail Gators.

Nov 17-19 would put us two weeks after NY State. That is the biggest draw from our area, TO and Montreal.
