Syracuse Points Race
#16
So we agree that it is a great promotional opportunity for the local player base.

Yeah. we need to get it to 8+ average for Ottawa to qualify, that's our #1 goal first, then the format.

Its still to help the people going. For instance if someone finishes in the top 4 but doesn't plan on going then they are dropped from the draw and replaced with the next highest person who is planning on going.

Its not really to encourage brand new players, its suppose to inspire recreational (beer leaguers) to come out to Syracuse and become competitive foosball players, and it does this by offering them a monetary incentive because many of the complaints surrounding attendance at tournaments includes the "financial costs" associated with attending the tournament.

So the chances of me finishing in the top 4 is going to be dependent on random draw and other peoples performances who are not interested in going to a competitive foosball tournament?

Like I said earlier, if your rigid about Student Promotion>Syracuse Promotion, then have the Syracuse points race on Wednesdays until league starts in October, then we can switch it to Fridays, at which point the September Student Promotion should be over.

Where did you get this from? We are supposed to video tape the draw and send it to them. I'm not about to manipulate the draw so that only attending players get the prize.

And why not? Why shouldn't new players be encouraged by this?

Agreed. This group of players will benefit the most from this promotion.

YES. Yes it is. Suck it up Nancy and play the game. Angry It is not just about you or the other players that are planning on going to Syracuse. This promotion is for EVERYONE. If we do only BYPs or Singles, then anyone outside the list of top players in OFA, which you mentioned as interested in going to Syracuse, won't stand a chance at winning Did you consider that? Did you consider that they should have an equal chance at winning this? Or should they not count because they don't have any skill yet?

This conversation is not being productive for OFA. I've already gotten text messages from people asking if they should NOT come on Friday because they are not planning on going to Syracuse and don't want to disappoint their partners who are. This is not good. We WANT people to come out, ESPECIALLY for the DYPs.

I'm not going to change the dates in the middle of the points race. It is unfortunate and fortunate that these two promotions are colliding. We can use this to our advantage to promote to the new STUDENTS that come out about big tournaments.

There have been two different types of views on this matter and others recently with OFA issues.
1) This is AWESOME! How can we use this to make OFA bigger and better?
2) This is AWESOME! How can I use this?

I will continue to focus on the first one.

Chris

You are far too unreasonable to even begin having constructive conversations so im not even going to try. Run your dictatorship however you want.

I would appreciate if you would stop the personal attacks though, its childish and unprofessional. If you can't debate without getting worked up don't.

Let the format work itself out, so long as it's on a Wed or Fri it's an OFA night.

Let's determine what the rankings are going to be, or if we follow IFP.

this means Taha is the only expert, everyone else is Amateur. Is that what we'll use?

playing is the thing boys, everything else either supports the playing and/or is just fluff

Sean Patrick Riley: "If a player finishes in the top 4 but definitely isn't going to travel they should be pulled and #5 on the list should go into the drawing. It makes everyone want to compete. No transferring prizes. If someone wins one of the prizes and then can't go they can use it a following. Year. The 4 prizes are 1 VIP pass and 3 registration fees valued at $50 each."

Thats my last post on the topic, its in El Presidentes hands now.

I'll have a constructive conversation with you when you start to consider other position that don't only benefit you. This has been a consistent theme in most of your positions on matters. This is where our fundamental disagreement lies. I try to take a position that will benefit the entire group.

Can you explain how moving the point race to Wednesday and running Singles/BYP will benefit anyone other than the handful of players that are serious about going to Syracuse? Will this foster growth in our club?

Leaving it on Fridays will help to promote and re-vitalize the DYPs. The goals of the student promotion and the point race is to increase attendance and participation. Combining the two will have an increase number of attendees and thus have a bigger impact on future DYPs.

Getting back to the constructive conversation, I asked direct questions in my reply that you have glossed over as me being a dictator. How do you answer your suggestion of manipulating the results so that only interested parties win? Don't you know that Kevin W. and other foosers read this board. How does it look when you suggest that? Why do you think Mary has to do the draws for the packages giveaways - because of reasons like that.

Can you provide your source? That has not been communicated on the Foosballboard or through emails.

I think a bit of randomness injected into the process via DYPs is a good thing. I will come out whenever possible for the points race. If I get a bit of a discount on the Syracuse trip, then great. If not, well I was going anyway. It seems to me that the whole point of the points race, and the reason it's a random choice between the top 4 and not just the prize going to the top person, is to get people to come out and play and give a number of people a shot at the big prize just for showing up and doing decently at the draw/points-race-event. This is a worthy goal in any case, so I think it's good that it's combined with the student prizes.

I'm good with anything. I'm just happy we have dedicated people who are trying to maintain and grow the Ottawa foosball scene. God knows I don't do anything other than show up and play.

Taha

Edit: Actually I do *occasionally* run the DYP... so I do sometimes do something.. unlike Merv who has been doing nothing for far longer than me Smile
My belief is that I get to make fun of your beliefs. Please respect my belief.

Taha, You are always good for a little chuckle. Merv has been far too busy taking all our money. Leaving little time for organizational duties. I hear Omar is trying for a bank loan so he can play money games against Merv this winter.

I haven't had time to chime in on this yet but do have and would like to contribute to this discussion once I have a chance to read this more in depth.
I plan on hitting a few tourneys this year and would love to win one of these packages.
That being said, I have no issues with a newbie having the same opportunity to win even if it's based on pure luck. Ex: Always getting Merv, Taha or Jon as a partner. Never being drawn with Belal.
I also wouldn't be upset if I was drawn with a newbie which would make it more difficult for me to climb up in the points race.

In the early days of OttawaFoos, a 4-man team won a free trip to Vegas by simply having their team name drawn from a hat. It obviously wasn't due to skill but rather the fact that they played and supported our foosball league.
That should always me our main focus.

Before ChrisT turned OFA into the Fosball Empire that it is today, that was also my focus as OttawaFoos commissioner/president. I ran Women's singles, Mixed Doubles and Beginner events for the sake of giving the non-pro foosball players the opportunity to play the game with something at stake.
In the end, let's be thankful that we have the opportunity to complain about the other kid's shoes because during the time I was running it, the league had no feet.

And Belal was one of our top players...
