Singles is certainly the best measure to determine who's best at Singles. For Doubles though it is not that simple.
For doubles BYP has the advantage of pairing players that want to be -- or at least have settled for -- playing together, a lot like a marriage.
Essentially determining merit as a team, this stands up better if the same pair later on will be playing together -- at Syracuse in this instance.
Not entirely the best approach, it might very well be the most practical regardless of collaterals as very timely hinted here for an unrelated event:
What would be best for Doubles is RYP, that is Rotate Your Partner. This is only possible in a closed system and/or a captive players' population.
Say you have 10 players and want a measure of their individual worth playing doubles: 9 matches where each player will be playing paired with each of the others only once.
With DYP to get the same measure of validity you would need many many more matches to weed out the random distortion.
And that's the way it is.
